It's all about having the right flight sim hardware…

The Best Left Handed Joysticks & Ambidextrous HOTAS

If you’re left-handed like me then you’ll probably be sick of having make-do with products that are made for right handers. Most joysticks currently on the market are right-handed so finding a left-handed joystick can be quite tricky. There are a few out there that are ambidextrous, and others designed specifically for one particular hand. The Thrustmaster T16000M is a bestselling model that offers a lot of bang for your buck.

The quality of this joystick and HOTAS combo is great. It has many features that are usually found on the more expensive models. The price tag for the T16000M is around the $100 mark, which is very reasonable considering the features it contains.
Ambidextrous Joystick – the Thrustmaster T16000M is ambidextrous, meaning that both left-hand and right-hand users will find using the joystick equally comfy and ergonomic. It slips into the palm of your hand whichever one you use.

Centering Mechanism – it uses a more expensive style of centering which incorporates a strong magnet that pulls the joystick back to the center. Cheaper versions use springs, which offer a worse feedback and sometimes the movement can feel a bit ‘scratchy’. Users report that this model has really accurate and precise controls.

Axes and Buttons – the joystick has four axes, which includes a twistable stick to control the rudder. This is handy if you don’t have separate rudder pedals. Some of you might prefer to leave ‘auto coordination’ turned on, but for controlling the plane in realistic crosswind conditions then you’ll want precise rudder control.

The joystick itself has 14 action buttons and a POV (point of view) hat switch to pan around the cockpit and scenery. The HOTAS throttle also has many programmable buttons for whatever you want to set them to.

Usability – The Thrustmaster T16000M is small enough to fit comfily on a desk next to your keyboard and mouse, yet is substantial enough to have a heavy and solid feel. The last thing you want is for your joystick to be sliding around your desk the whole time. Both the joystick and HOTAS throttle have separate USB leads, so you’ll need to make sure you have two spare USB ports on your computer.

To summarize, the Thrustmaster T16000M FCS HOTAS Controller is a great piece of kit and for just over $100 is probably one of the best left handed joysticks available on the market currently. It features a wide range of features and buttons, and has a build quality that is usually found on much higher priced models (such as the Warthog). One particular review on Amazon says this in a nutshell:

“You can buy the Thrustmaster Warthog and a set of high quality pedals for over $400 but the jump in price doesn’t justify the difference you get IMO”
